Descendants of Werner Schneider

Generation One

1. Werner1 Schneider was born circa 1700. He died after 1767.

Children of Werner1 Schneider and Anna Maria Klang were:

Generation Two

2. Johannes2 Schneider (Werner1) was born in Jan 1743/44 at Maar, Hessen, Germany. He died on 11 Jan 1813 at Iba, Hessen, Germany.

Children of Johannes2 Schneider and Anna Katharina Schade were as follows:

Generation Three

3. Daniel3 Schneider (Johannes2, Werner1) was born on 5 Aug 1767 at Iba, Hessen, Germany.1 He died on 22 Feb 1828 at Iba, Hessen, Germany.

He was Mason. He resided before 1828; lived in #67 (now #63) on the main street.

Children of Daniel3 Schneider and Amalie Kegel all born at Iba, Hessen, Germany, were as follows:

Generation Four

4. Justus August4 Schneider (Daniel3, Johannes2, Werner1) was born on 23 Jul 1809 at Iba, Hessen, Germany, godparent Justus Schneider. He died on 2 Sep 1873 at Frostburg, Allegany County, Maryland.2

He was Miner. He immigrated arriving between 1 Jan 1857 and 4 Apr 1857. He was naturalized on 1 Nov 1861. Research on Justus (Yustece?) August Schneider, reported by Mary H. Carerra

A birth record was obtained from a book owned by Werner Kegel of Osna Bruch, Germany. Werner's father collected these items when he was mayor of Oba. An initial entry of July 23, 1809 was changed to 1810. In addition, there is a note that he was rejected by the military draft in 1828 because he was 'zu klein' - too small. Research by Herre Strube of Oba in 1983 also found a b.d. of July 23, 1810. This information came from the records kept by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oba. His god parent is listed as Justus Schneider.

He filed his Declaration of Intention to become a citizen in Cumberland on April 4, 1857 at the age of 47 (note that this supports a birth in 1809, since the April date precedes his birthday). He was granted citzenship on November 1, 1861

His burial place is listed in Scharf's, History of Western Maryland as the Percy Cemetery in Frostburg.

He appears in the 1860 Census as Auguste age 50, wife Mary age 50, and son Henry age 16. His occupation is listed as miner. Their place of origin is Hesse Cassel. In the 1870 Census he is listed as Justus. He declares real estate with a value of $300. The real estate was purchased on April 4, 1857 (the same date he applied for citizenship - perhaps a tribute to the difficulties of transportation at the time). The transaction is recorded in Liber 154 page 532 for $90. He sold this property on December 1, 1871 (Liber 36, page 97) for $450.3

Children of Justus August4 Schneider and Anna Maria Koch all born at Iba, Hessen, Germany, were as follows:

Generation Five

5. Katharina Elisabetha5 Schneider (Justus4, Daniel3, Johannes2, Werner1) was born on 27 Nov 1832 at Iba, Hessen, Germany. She died in 1874 at Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland.

Children of Katharina Elisabetha5 Schneider and Carl August Domdera were as follows:

6. Conrad5 Schneider (Justus4, Daniel3, Johannes2, Werner1) was born on 18 Apr 1835 at Iba, Hessen, Germany.7,8 He died on 4 Oct 1910 at Frostburg, Allegany County, Maryland, by suicide see note. Death Certificate says it was not a suicide. The informant was Henry N. Schneider.9,10 He was buried after 4 Oct 1910 in Percv Cemetery, Frostburg.11

He was Mason. He immigrated arriving 18 Oct 1854 to Baltimore, Maryland; on the ship Charles from Bremen see note below. Research on Conrad Schneider, reported by Mary H. Carerra He came to the US on the ship Charles arriving in Baltimore from Bremen on October 18, 1854. He gave his age as 18 (really 19 at this time), occupation as mason, and last residence as Iba. LDS microfilm #417,392 His birth date was found by Herr Strube in the church books of Iba. The 1860 Census shows him married and in Frostburg with a one month old infant - Peter in his household. This child is never again reported. His occupation is listed as miner. On March 9, 1866 for $1650 he bought a tract of land called 'good luck' (liber 23, page 532) In the 1870 Census he appears as a hotel keeper and he has $1600 in real estate. Apparently there was an interlude in St. Louis. On August 21, 1875, the Frostburg Mining Journal reported 'the corner lot of the old Franklin Hotel was sold to Conrad Snyder, formerly of this place, but now of St. Louis, Mo. for $3500' (Note that in the 1910 Census, Oscar's place of birth is reported as Missouri- db February 1876.) MHC has found many real estate transactions in Allegany County involving Conrad in the period 1866-1891, but none in 1875. One of his real estate transactions involved purchasing a parcel known as 'the hotel,' which is later sold in parts. In the 1880 Census Conrad is a saloon keeper with a daughter age 6. However, the Frostburg Mining Journal reports on April 8, 1882 that 'Conrad Snyder has retired from the saloon business and removed to his new residence on Main st near the south-eastern limits.' Later that year, on September 30, 1882, the Journal reported 'Messers. Conrad and Henry Snyder, of this place, have opened a new shoe store on Broadway. They have a choice stock to select from. See advertisement.' In the 1900 Census, he is a miner again. He and his wife report that they entered the US in 1854 and daughter Agatha - age 26 - is unmarried. The 1910 Census shows them living on Union Street in Frostburg. Under occupation he reports he has his own income. He died shortly after the census information was collected. MHC has a copy of his will. It was written on March 26, 1901 and left everything to his wife, Lauretta. It was brought to probate on October 7, 1910. The Journal of October 8, 1910 reports his death on Tuesday October 4 of paralysis after being a helpless invalid for about 9 years. It reports his birth in Iba on April 18, 1835 and his coming to the US in 1855 (compare to 1900 Census). A copy of this Obituary is among the materials sent from Frostburg by A.E. Crosby - rec. December 17, 1993. MHC was never able to find a copy of his marriage certificate. He shot (source of this inf? obit says it was not suicide) himself to death on October 4, 1910. He is buried in the Percy Cemetery in Frostburg.

Children of Conrad5 Schneider and Lauretta Schuchman were as follows:

7. Heinrich Nicholas5 Schneider (Justus4, Daniel3, Johannes2, Werner1) was born on 7 Dec 1843 at Iba, Hessen, Germany.12 He died on 19 Sep 1912 at Frostburg, Allegany County, Maryland, informant: Conrad Schneider of Palmyra Pa; cause of death: Carcinoma of liver.13 He was buried on 22 Sep 1912 in Frostburg Cemetery - Section 1 Lot 14, Frostburg, then called Mcluskies Cemetery.14

He immigrated from Hesse Cassel, a German state which ceased to exist about 1858 arriving circa 1856 to Frostburg. He was a merchant. He owned a shoestore at 81 East Main Street, Frostburg. He resided at 154 Maple Street after 1903; constructed in 1903. His obituary appeared on 19 Sep 1912. It read:

Mr. Henry N. Schneider, the venerable shoemaker and one of Frostburg's most highly esteemed citizens, whose daughter and daughter-in-law were killed in the terrible accident which occurred near here about a month ago on the Western Maryland tracks by the B. & O. passenger train No. 14, has not been able to recover from the shock. His condition became so alarming that he has been taken to Baltimore, accompanied by Rev. George E. Metzger, Pastor of Salem Reformed Church, where he will receive treatment under the care of a specialist. Mr. Schneider is past 60 years of age. Miss Minnie Schneider, another daughter, who was slightly injured in the accident, has entirely recovered, but still feels the effects of the shock of that awful tragedy in which four prominent young women lost their lives.

Mr. Schneider Laid To Rest

The tragic incidents which hastened the death of Mr. Harry N. Schneider, one of Frostburg's most highly esteemed citizens, which occurred last Thursday morning, made his funeral yesterday afternoon one on the saddest that has ever occurred un Frostburg. Mr. Schneider's illness, while of more than a year's duration, did not become serious until a month ago, when his daughter, Miss Minnie Schneider, and daughter-in-law, Mrs Oscar Schneider, met their awful deaths on the Western Maryland railroad tracks by being run over by B. & O. passenger train No. 14. The shock of the loss of his daughter and daughter-in-law so affected Mr. Schneider that his malady which was cancer of the liver, made quick and sure inroads upon his weakened condition. With the hope of being benefited he was taken last Monday to Baltimore to receive special treatment, but his condition was found to be so serious that he was brought home on Wednesday afternoon, dying ten hours later.

Mr. Schneider was a native of Germany and was 67 years old. He came to Frostburg at the age of 12 years and after working in the mines for some years, became engaged in the shoe business in which he was successful, as his fine store fully bears evidence. He was a member of Salem Reformed church, from which the funeral took place, the solemn services being conducted by the pastor Rev. Geo. E. Metzger. The church was crowded with sorrowing friends. Many beautiful floral tributes were banked abouth the casket.

He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mr. John Schneider, of West Virginia; Mr. Conrad F. Schneider, of Palmyra, Pa., Mr. Oscar Schneider of Orlando, Florida, Messrs. Alvin and Melvin Schneider and Mrs. Anna Miller, of this place. The interment was in Allegany cemetery, where were interred a month ago his daughter and daughter-in-law.

The pallbearers were: Messrs. Henry Morgan, Alfred Thomas, James D. Williams and William Conrad of the Shield of Honor, Messrs. August Arnold, William Glodfeyt, Jacob Pressman and George Mayer.

The flowerbearers were Edward L. Betz, John Kemp, Conrad Lapp, Sr., Conrad Semler, Otto Hohing, Sr., Peter Lammert, Hugh Speir and George Jones.
