He was sitting in a chair conversing with his daughter, when his head dropped over, his hat fell off, his cane slipped from his hand, and with a few gasps for breath he expired. He had just returned from a walk up town, and his death was very unexpected, as he was previously in the enjoyment of his usual health. For over a year, however, he had been failing, owing to advanced years, and he was subject to heart troubles. He was a candidate on the Republican county ticket for such offices as Director of the Poor and Coroner in a number of campaigns, and was an inspector of election in the Fifth ward for a continuous period of thirty-one years. He was noted for his devotion to Republican principles and during political campaigns never missed attending the meetings of the party. In acknowledgement of the interest which he ever manifested he was frequently honored with letters from distinguished leaders. Quite recently he expressed the wish that he might live until the election of a Republican President. He was married to Caroline Heckman, with whom he lived in wedlock for about fifty-five years, and who survives. Eight children were born to the couple, of whom five daughters and one son are living.
