Generation One

1. Christopher1 Wittman was born circa 1700. He died before 12 Sep 1770 at Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.1 His estate was submitted to probate on 12 Sep 1770 at Lancaster County.2

On 26 Mar 1747, he purchased 346 acres in Cocalico Township. Prior to this time he was in Hanover Township, Montgomery County.3

Christopher Wittman registered a will on 18 Feb 1765 at Manheim Township, Lancaster County, which read:

Christopher Witman decd - In the Name of God Amen I Christopher Whitman of Manheim Township in the County of Lancaster and Province of Pennsylvania Yeoman being Weak of Body, but of Perfect sound and disposing Mind Memory & understanding calling to mind the uncertainty of Human Life and that it is ordered for all one once to die Do recommend my soul to my Great Creator who gave it and my Body to the Earth from whence it came in hopes of a Glorious Resurrection through the Merits of Jesus Christ my Redeemer And as to my Worldly Estate with Which it hath pleaseth God to bless me do bequeath in manner following First I order that all of my just Debts and funeral Expences be discharged and paid by my Executor as soon as Conveniently may be after my decease then I give and bequeath unto my well beloved Wife Barbara my House and ten acres of Land in Manheim Township Lancaster County with all the Buildings and Edifices thereon together with all and Singular. my Personal Estate Bonds Money and other affects of what name soever To hold the same for and During her Natural Life granting her hereby full power and Authority to sell and Convey the said Lott of ground above mentioned [if she pleases] to any person whomsoever impowring her to make execute and Deliver sufficient title for the same to the purchaser And further I Order and Direct that all and whatsoever my said Wife Barbara shall leave at the time of her Death that it shall be divided amongst my Children Vizt Adam Christopher, John, Michael & Henry Witman and my Daughters Rosina Wife of Detrick Kremer Madlena Wife of Ludwig Imler Regina Wife of William Kurtz But nevertheless that a Due Regard shall be had to a Certain Book wherein I have specified all and whatsoever I have already given to Each of my Children aforehand so that if one of them have received of me than the other that they then shall be made Equal so as to be made share and share alike of the Estate so left at the time of my wife's death And Lastly I do hereby Nominate Constitute and Appoint my Beloved Wife Barbara afores. to be my whole and sole Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament Disanuling and utterly making void all other Will or Wills by me before made in Witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal the eighteenth Day of February in the Year of our Lord one Thousand seven Hundred and sixty five. Lancaster County on the Twelfth Day of September Anno Dom 1770 Before me the Subscriber Personally appeared Casper Shaffner jun and Elizabeth Shaffner two of the subscribing Witnesses to the within Will and on their Corporal Oath did depose and say that they were present and Saw and Heard Christoph Witman the Testator within named Sign Seal Publish Pronounce and declare the within Writing as and for his last Will and Testament and that at the doing thereof he was of sound and well disposing Mind Memory & Understanding to the best of their Knowledge observation and belief.

Be it remembered that on the twelfth Day of September Anno Domini 1770 The last Will and Testament of Christopher Witman late of the County of Lancaster Yeoman deceased was proved in due form of law and letters Testamentary thereon were granted to Barbara Witman the Executrix therein Named she Being first duly Qualified well and truly to administer the Estate of the said decedent and to Exhibit a true and perfect Inventory thereof into the Registers Office at Lancaster on or before the twelfth Day of October next and to render a true and just Account of her Administration on the said Estate when thereto Lawfully required given under the seal of the office at Lancaster.

3. Christopher2 Wittman (Christopher1) was born in 1725.11 He died between 29 Apr 1778 and 20 May 1778 at Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. His estate was submitted to probate on 20 May 1778 at Reading, Berks County.

On 4 Oct 1766 he was appointed coroner of Berks County. He was an Innkeeper in 1774 at SW Corner of Penn Square & 4th Street, Reading.12

Christopher Wittman registered a will on 29 Apr 1778 at Reading, which read:

I Christopher Witman of the town of Reading in the County of Berks in Pennsylvania yoeman am weak in body but of a good disposing mind, memory and understanding. Thanks be to God for it, and I have considered the mortality of my body, do hereby make and publish this to be my testament and last will in manner and form.

Imprimis I recommend my immortal soul in the hands of Almighty God and my body to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner in the Earth and that all my lawful debts shall be paid out or my estate by my executors or the survivor of them.

2ndly I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Barbara Witman the sum of thirty pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania to be paid soon after my death. My Bed and Bedstead and all the furniture belonging to the same Bed· and all Linnen Cloth · all the yearn and flax · all the grain and meal in my house and possession · all the meat · one Chest and Drawers in my Bed Room · her choice of one of my Tables six chairs · two iron pots · 1 iron pamm. a pair of fire tongs & Shovel · three pewter · Basons or plates · six smaller plates six ? plates · Six Knives and forks twelve Spoons · a flesch fork · one iron scumming leadel · one p??p leadel · one thee kettel · one thee pot · one coffe pot · six thee Cups & Saucers · one china Bowl · one pewter tanker · one pint Do: two flat irons · ???? traps · two bails · two chandel sticks · and snufers · three bottels · one spinning wheel · an ax · one Hymn Book · the smal bed with the furniture wherein my sons Jacob and Daniel sleept in · all the dry apples in the house. · four earthen pots · and a ????? · and I do further order that my Executors or the survivor of them shal put out and buy three hundred and fifty pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania on interest at good security or in the loan office · and give and Deliver the Interest thereof yearly and Every year to my said wife or to her orders During the time of her natural life · and it is further my will that my said wife shall have full liberty and privelidge to Dwell in my Small House on the westermost Endof the lot No.32 in the town of Reading until my son Abraham Wittman attains the age of twenty-one years. · And from and after the time aforesaid my said wife is to dwell in the next house to the afore mentioned towards the East End of the Lot No 32 adjoining Penn Street · and that during the time of her widowhood only and no longer and all the above bequests shall be line of her thirds or Dower of my Estate.

3rdly It is my will that my Executors or the Survivors of them shall pay to my said wife Barbara all the Rents and Interest which may accrue of the Estate and Legacys as I herein Shall bequeath to my two sons Jacob and Daniel until they Respectively apiece to the age of fourteen years · as and for their support and Maintenance if my said wife should Mary again then and in such Case my Executors or the Survivors of them Shall have full power to board my said sons to such place or places as to them or the survivors of them shall seem propper in case her mother doth not do her duty as a mother ought to do.

4thly I give and bequeath to my son John Wittman my house and Lot of ground in the town of Reading whereon I dwell No. thirty four it being a Corner Lot between Penn Street and queen street to have and to hold to him my son John Wittman his heirs and assigns for Ever with this Condition that he shall pay to my son William Wittman the sum of three hundred pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania in three months time after my death.

5thly I give and Bequeath to my son William Wittman the sum of fifteen pounds lawful money aforesaid over and above the sum of three hundred pounds that my son John Wittman is to pay to him as above Mentioned.

6thly I give and bequeath to my son George Wittman the sum of three hundred and fifty pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania to be paid to him one hundred pounds There of in three months time after my Death and the further sum of two hundred and fifty pounds in one year after my death.

7thly I give and bequeath to my son Abraham Witman one Moiety or half part of my lot with all the buildings Erected in the town of Reading it being part of the corner lot between Penn Street and Callowhill Street. The whole Lot is marked in the plan of the town number thirty two · that is to said from East to west on Penn Street sixty feet and from South to North fifty feet on Callowhill Street · to have and to hold to my son Abraham Wittman his heirs and assigns forever · and I do further give to him all my shoemaker tools and the bed and bedstead he commonly slept in and he shall pay to my daughter Catherina Wittman the sum of fifty pounds lawful money at the time that she arrives to the age of nineteen years and he and his heirs Executors administrators and assigns shall suffer my wife Barbara without Molestation or hindrance to live in the house on said lot as is mentioned in the second article or paragraph.-

8thly I give and bequeath to my daughter Catherina Wittman the sum of two hundred fifty pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania · over and above the sum of fifty which my son Abraham Wittman is to pay to her to be paid at the time when she attains to the age of eighteen years and further I give her the Bed and Bedstead She Commonly Sleept in · and all the furniture belonging to the said Bed · one iron pot six pewter plates · six ____plates · two pewter Basons · six spoons one thee Kettel two candel sticks two brass leadels one table and one fine table cloth · three flat irons two bowels six delft Plates · four chairs · one china bowl one frying pan · one thee pot · six thee cups and saucers one Testament and a Hymn Book. and it is my will if my said Daughter should incline to purches any articles of my personal goods at the vendue to be held by my Executors · that She Shall be charged with and so much as she receives in goods as aforesaid such sum shall be deemed as part of her two hundred and fifty pound aforesaid.

9thly I give and bequeath to my son Jacob Wittman the sum of three hundred and fifty pounds lawful money aforesaid to be paid in three months time after my Death and I give him one English Bible and one german Bible.

10thly I give and bequeath to my son Daniel Wittman the other moiety or half part of my lot of ground in town of Reading the whole lot is marked in the plan of the said ___ 32 that is to say adjoining on the east by Callowhill Street · on the South by the other moiety aforesaid and herein given to my son Abraham Wittman and on the north by a piece of ground belonging to Thomas Youngman on the west by the ______ 31 to have and to hold to him my son Daniel Wittman his heirs and assigns for Ever. And I give him the sum of one hundred pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania to be paid in three months time after my death.

11thly It is my will and I order that my Executor or the survivors of them shall sel my said lot near the town of Reading Containing about five acres of Land it be the same more or less which I bought of Richard Hokly, and I give them or the survivors of them full power and authority to Sign Seal and Deliver a good deed to the purchaser and his heirs and assigns forever · and it is further my will that my Executors or survivors of them shall sel all my personal estate [except what I have herein before Bequeathed] at publick venture as soon as conveniently may be after my death. and all the overplus what remains when all my Debts and Legacies are paid they shill Divide to and among all my Children in Equal Shares · and the sum of three hundred and fifty pounds which I ordered to be lend upon interest for the benefit of my wife as aforesaid shall after her death be divided to and among all my children or their Representatives in Equal shares · and it is further my will that in Case one of my Children should Die in their Minority unmarried and without an heir · then such legacy of such child ______ shall be Divided to and among all my Children or their Representatives in Equal Shares.

Lastly I nominate constitute and appoint my beloved wife Barbara Wittman · my son John Wittman and my Trusty Friend Henry Raffer (?) in Douglas Township Berks County to be Executrix and Executors of this my testament and last will. Ratifying and allowing this to be my Last will and testament. and I make null and void all former wills by me made ??? ????? whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal April the twenty ninth 1778.

Reading in Berks County May 20th 1778 personally appeared Leonhard Rapport Andreas Engle & William Risser witnesses to the afore written will they said Leonhard Rappert Andreas Engle on their solemn oaths and the said Wl Teaser on his solemn affirmation did severally depose that they were present & saw & heard Christ. Wittman the testator therein named sign seal pronounce publish & declare the afore writing to be his Last will & testament & that at the time of doing thereof he was of sound mind memory & understanding as they verily believe. Who subscribed their names threrunto as witnesses respectively at the request & in the presence of the said testator.

His obituary appeared on 3 Jun 1817. It read:

Reading Alder 1797-1824, page 66 'Witman, died the 18th of last May at the home of Jacob Meyer in Heidelberg-Heinrich Witman in his 83rd year. for 55 years he had been an esteemed resident of Reading.' Published Tues. June 3, 1817 - From letter from Dale and Florence Collins of Espyville PA Jan. 10, 1996.

State of Pennsylvania Berks County On this 16th day of Nov 1843 came in person in open court before the quarter session in and for said County, Benjamin Whitman a resident of Said County aged sixty eight who on his solemn oath makes the following declaration to obtain the benefits of the provisions of the act of Congress passed the 4th of July 1836. Applicant States that he is informed and has good reason to believe that his father John Whitman enlisted as a regular Soldier in the army of the American Revolution in the Pa Line that he continued to Serve as Such in the 1st and 2nd Pa. Regiments, until the close of the War, the name of the officer this affiant does not know, but must beg leave to refer to the records in Harrisburg & Washington City. That said John Whitman before the revolutionary war about the year 1771 intermarried with Anna Maria Yeager in Reading Pa that they continued to live together as Such until 1819 when said John Whitman died, that his widow Anna Maria lived as Said Whitman's widow untill the 14th day of Nov 1837, when she departed this life, that this affiant and Johnathon Whitman of Dauphin County Pa are the Surviving Children of Said Anna Maria & John Whitman dead, that affiant had no documentary evidence in his possession at this time & if he should find any he will furnish it that he knows of no witness by whom he can prove his service the register of birth of said John & Anna Marias Children ________to and Subscribe this day & year aforesaid Benjamin Witman

The affidavit of Wm Pauli taken at the town of Reading on the 16th day of of Nov 1843 affiant States that he is the minister of the German Reformed Church, and as such has the Custody of the old records minutes Books &. Of said Church from the year 1770 to 1778 inclusive, and on the books of a date 1771 the 1st Sept. is the following entry made therein by Wm Boas the then minister of Said Church, to wit, 1st Sept 1771 I married John Witman and Anna Maria Jaeger both of Reading all in the hand writing of the said Wm Boas

State of Pennsylvania Berks county Wm Schvaner a Justice of the peace in aforesaid County, Wm Pauli, who made oath to the fore going affidavit. He is well known to me and is the minister of the German Reformed church. Sworn under my hand this 16th day of Nov. 1843

State of Pennsylvania Berks County I Daniel Young Prothonotary of the court of Common Pleas of Berks County do certify that William Schoener is an acting Justice of the Peace in and for said County, duly elected and ______________ and that the above signature purporting to be his is true and genuine The testimony where of I have hereunder set my hand and affixed the seal of said Court at Reading November 16, 1843 Daniel Young Prothonotary

Also came in open court Geo Schall aged 83 years who on his oath State that they had been acquainted with John & Ann Maria Whitman for 65 years and that they lived together as man & wife from my earliest acquaintance until about the year 1819 when said John departed this life, that seid Ann Maria lived as said John's widow untill the 14th day of Nov. 1837 when she departed this life, that Benj Whitman of Berks County Pa & Johnathan Whitman of Dauphin County are the only Surviving children of Said John & Ann Maria Whitman and that Said John was _________ a Soldier of the Revolution Geo Schnell The court are satisfied that Benj & Johnathon Whitman are the only Surviving Children of Ann Maria & John Whitman dead & that Said Widow died on the 14th Nov 1837. All of which is ordered to be certified.

She was enumerated with Peter Rhein on the census of 25 Jun 1860 at SouthWest Ward, Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, as Eliza Rein *She was shown as age 58. Her death notice on 13 Sep 1886 read:

The funeral of the late Mrs. Eliza Rhein took place this afternoon from the residence of her son Augustus, 517 Laurel street. The attendance was very large. Rev. Dickley of the 4th street M.E. church, conducted services. Interment was made in Charles Evans cemetery by Undertaker Miller.

Jacob Rhein

aged 76 years, died of cancer of the throat early this morning, at the home of his son, William Rhein, Blandon, after an illness of four months. He had been bedfast three weeks. Mr. Rhein was born and reared in Reading and attended the schools of this city. When a young man he learned the trade of a puddler, beginning at the age of 12 years. He was first employed at the Bertolet Rolling Mill at the foot of Penn street. He was boss roller there for many years. Later he was employed in the Seyfert, McManus & Co. mill and in later years was with the Reading Iron Company. Mr. Rhein was recognized as a roller of skill. Deceased retired about six years ago and for seven months lived at Blandon. While in this city he had lived at 433 Spruce street and also with his son-in-law G. Sam. Hantsch, 119 South Fourth street. Mr. Rhein was a member of St. Peter's M. E. Church, the Knights of Pythias and the Odd Fellows. His wife died four years ago. Deceased is survived by the following children: Mrs. Henry Kerns, Reading; William Rhein, Blandon; Charles Rhein, Reading, and one brother, Augustus Rhein, this city. The remains will be brought to this city for interment. Undertaker Miller has charge.

He began military service on 7 Jun 1861; Company A, 3rd Pennsylvania Volunteers.368 He was described as 4 feel 5 ½ inches tall; of light complexion with gray eyes and black hair in 1861.369 He ended military service on 17 Jun 1864.370 On 28 Nov 1891 He applied for an invalid pension at age 53. He was "seven- eighths unable to earn a support by manual labor by reason of impaired eyesight - especially the left eye -no teeth, rheumatism, kidney affection, piles, heart affection, dry tetter, pain across small of the back - much pain on the chest, left side - disease of lungs."371 He resided at 1915 Gibralter Street, Robeson Township, Berks County, in 1915. Deceased was a member of St. Peter's M.E. Church and had many friends.

The funeral of Julia, wife of G. Samuel Hantsch (nee Rhein), took place from her residence 119 South 4th at 11 a. m. Rev. B. T. Callen held services. The remains lay in a square-cornered mahogany carved casket, with oxidized extension bar handles, oxidized trimmings and plate, and were attired in a lavender robe. The bearers were: William and Charles Rhein, Howard Hantsch and Conrad Schneider. Among the out-of-town people present were: Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Schneider, Maryland; John W. Watkins of Phila. The tributes included a large flat cluster of 44 chrysanthemums, emblematic of deceased's age, from family; cluster of roses, parents; cluster of chrysanthemums, Mrs. George E. Ruth and daughter; cluster of carnations, George Atkins; cluster of chrysanthemums, Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Schwenk and family; cluster of roses, sister Tillie; cluster of roses, Howard; cluster of pink carnations, Hollis family; cluster of white chrysanthemums, Mr. and Mrs. Ammon Leinbach; cluster of white chrysanthemums, M. G. Hollis; cluster of La France roses, Maude; cluster of yellow chrysanthemums, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rhein; anchor on pedestal of natural flowers, bearing inscription "Sadly missed," in blue immortelles, nephew Jacob Rhein. Interment in Charles Evans Cemetery. Funeral director, E. S. Miller.

He was a foreman for the Philadelphia & Reading Railway in 1900.497 He resided at 1215 Chestnut Street, Reading, in 1922.498 His obituary appeared on 26 May 1947. It read:

Charles H. Rhein, 79, died yesterday in his home, 1107 Chestnut St. Retired in the past ten years, he was a son of the late Jacob and Jane Rhein, and was a member of Lodge 62. F. and A. M.; P. and R. Relief Association and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Surviving is a widow, Anna B. (Schaetzle) Rhein. Services Thursday at 1 p. m. in the T. C. Auman, Inc., Funeral Parlors, the Rev. Dr. Charles E. Roth officiating. Burial in Charles Evans Cemetery.

Samuel W. Landis, aged 74 years, 10 months and 5 days, died of complications at 7:45 o'clock Thursday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Eisenbise, Blue Marsh. Mr. Landis was the last of his family, and was a lifelong resident of Reading. His parents were the late Dr. and Mrs. George Landis. His father practiced his profession both in this city and Birdsboro. Mr. Landis was a molder by trade, but for many years was employed as a plumber. He was retired the last two years and attended services and the Sunday school of the Memorial Baptist Church, this city. Besides the daughter, at whose home he died, Jennie, wife of George Eisenbise, there remain three sons, Clifford, Laureldale, and Edward and Chester, this city; 18 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Director Cramp removed the remains to his retaining rooms.

His wife, Anna Valeria Rhein, died four years ago. Surviving are three children; Laura E., wife of former Mayor Heber Ermentrout; Harry W. and George G. Rhein, at home, five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, one stepbrother, T. (sic) A. Rhein, this city.

Funeral Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Services at the F. F. Seidel, Inc. funeral parlors, the Rev. Arthur H. Naugle officiating. Interment in Aulenbach's cemetery.

Rhein, who was a barber in Reading for 50 years, died suddenly last evening while seated in a chair in the garden of his home, 207 South Fourth St. Members of the family said he had worked yesterday at the Reading Hospital where he is employed. Rhein was the first state barber inspector in Reading, serving from 1931 to 1934. He was formerly secretary and treasurer of the Pennsylvania State Barbers' Association for ten years and was active in securing passage of the state sanitary barber bill. He conducted a barber shop at Sixth and Washington Streets for many years, and was a member of the Elks and St. John's Reformed Church. Surviving are his widow, Ella (Leisey); five daughters, E. Nettie, wife of Philip Wesner, Reading; Florence, wife of Passmore Brison, Reading; Elsie, wife of John Wertz, Reading; Dorothy G., wife of Thomas Schrader, Reading and Mildred R., wife of George Wolf, Trumbauerville, ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services Monday at 2 o'clock in the F. F. Seidel, Inc. Funeral Home. The Rev. W. O. Laub and the Rev. Dr. Thomas H. Leinbach officiating. Burial in Charles Evans Cemetery.
