In March of 1946, Aunt Carrie Letterman went to Palmyra, PA to talk to a Robert Stewart and Joseph Kettering to try to find out what part of Germany the Ketterings came from, having always heard that they had landed in Norfolk. They were not there and she asked if they would write her the information. She never heard from them and Aunt Carrie returned later that month and found that 'two old men Ketterings', called Uncles, who came from Germany and were bachelors, heard of people by that name living in Norfolk and rode to Virginia on wooden saddles and brought three boys, Valentine Kettering, Michael Kettering - brothers - and John Kettering, a cousin, back, and adopted them all. Valentine is the Great Grandfather of Carrie and Henry Letterman (my, Paul Hill, grandfather). The uncle's headstones were sandstone and so weathered that they were unreadable. *The uncles gave the boys their land, 6 hundred acres they 'took up' from the Indians. They must have been well educated, for 'Grandmother (Catherine) used to tell how they burned books in Latin, because no person could read them'. *From Kettering Bible: *Landed in Norfolk, VA Apr 4, 1801 after a passage 9 weeks from the port of _ork__, (maybe Borkum, Germany). From end of Jan to end of April 1916 he had Sciatica and was run down and went to Tucson, AZ and on to Franklin's in Pomona, CA , school chum. He returned home when Dr. said he was OK. By Feb 13, 1918 he had phlebitis in left leg and could not hold food. He died in Mar 1918.

PALMYRA -- Walter B. Kettering, 87, of the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home died Friday in Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon.
He retired as owner/operator of Emwalt Services Inc., Hershey, which he founded, and retired as manager of Hershey Laundry and Dry Cleaning; was a member, past president and Paul Harris Fellow of the Hershey Rotary Club; a past president of Lebanon County Christian Endeavor; a past vice president of Pennsylvania Dutch Days, Hershey; and a member, trustee Sunday School teacher and song leader of First Evangelical Congregational Church.
Surviving are his wife, Emma E. Kettering; two sons, Robert D. of Manheim and Dr. W. Richard of Lancaster; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in his church. Private burial will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery, North Londonderry Twp.
Viewing will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday in Rothermel Funeral Home.
